A minimum of 13 individuals perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
